Trampolines are really fun, but can be potentially dangerous if trampoline safety precautions are not followed. Trampolines themselves are not dangerous unless they are poorly built.
Most trampoline-related injuries are caused by negligence.
Read the trampoline safety tips below and share them with your friends and family to maximize the fun and reduce the risk of injury.
Trampoline Safety Before Getting on the Trampoline
#1- Before buying
This should be a given… read our trampoline reviews first! Find out about weight limits, trampoline safety features, and best rated trampolines.
#2- Trampoline Safety Should not be an Option
Consider buying a quality trampoline with an enclosure. A trampoline safety net prevents jumpers from falling off.
Quality parts will make the trampoline sturdier. Not only will it last longer, but it will prevent it from tipping over
#3- Reading is Vital
Read the manual and recommended trampoline safety precautions before attempting to assemble the trampoline.
#4- Level Surface
Be sure to place the trampoline on a level surface to avoid tipping.
#5- Make Some Room
Leave ample space between the trampoline and other objects (walls, fences, etc.), people or pets. As mentioned on our main trampoline review page, at least 3′ (0.9m) of space should be left on each side of the trampoline.
Avoid leaving things beneath the trampoline and make sure your pet is nowhere near. Also remember to leave at least 24′ (7.3m) of clear space above the trampoline.
#6- Inspect
Inspect the trampoline once it’s assembled and before using it. Check that the trampoline safety enclosure, pads, tubes, etc. are positioned correctly.
They should all be in good condition. Replace any worn or torn trampoline parts, as they may also cause injuries.
#7- Practice trampoline safety
Get together with your children and teach them how to safely enter and exit the trampoline. If not bundled with the trampoline, consider buying a trampoline ladder.
#8- Keep it Tidy
Do not leave objects on the trampoline, as they may potentially cause injury.
Trampoline Safety While on the Trampoline
#1. Adult supervision is key
Trampoline safety is everyone’s responsibility, but there should always be an adult keeping an eye out for children and inexperienced jumpers.
#2. One at a Time
Multiple jumpers increase the risk of injury from a collision. This is usually easier said than done.
Most kids love jumping together, but this trampoline safety tip is something you should discuss with your family.
#3. Don’t Overdo it
Inexperienced jumpers run the risk of landing awkwardly, even if landing on the center of the trampoline.
Also, teach your children to stay in the middle of the trampoline when jumping. Please note that doing complex jumps may seriously harm the jumper, even when landing in the middle.
#4. Avoid Rough Housing
Discourage this behavior, and avoid purposely jumping into the netting. This may cause the jumper to be badly hurt. Jumpers should not get on the trampoline with objects, especially if they’re sharp.
#5. Dress Appropriately
This might sound basic, but avoid wearing clothes that may get caught in the netting.
External Trampoline Safety Precautions
- Wind. Wind may cause the jumper to lose control and land awkwardly. This may also cause the trampoline to tip over.
- Rain/snow. The trampoline should not be used if the jumping surface is wet. Buying a trampoline cover is a good idea.
- Storms. Trampolines are mostly made out of metal and, therefore, conduct electricity. An electrocution hazard exists when jumping during a storm.
